Indications
Male breast reduction surgery is performed to treat gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts). Candidates for gynecomastia surgery include men who are close to their normal weight but are bothered by feminine-looking breasts. In men with gynecomastia, the excess breast tissue may be either fat or actual breast tissue. Both versions of the condition can be addressed through male breast reduction. Fatty gynecomastia is typically treated with liposuction, while glandular breast tissue needs to be directly excised.

Where Does the Surgery Take Place?

Incisions
When using liposuction alone, Dr. Corbett makes several small incisions in the chest and underarm area. When more extensive reduction is required, Dr. Corbett makes incisions around the areolas (colored skin surrounding the nipples). The size of the incisions will depend on the amount of tissue being removed. Dr. Corbett will make every effort to ensure the incisions are placed in natural body creases where they will be minimally visible.
Anesthesia
General anesthesia is required.
Surgery Time
Male breast reduction usually takes about 1 hour.
Recovery
Most Louisville male breast reduction patients return to a normal routine within 3 or 4 days. You will need to wear a compression vest for 2 to 3 weeks. Weightlifting and aerobic exercise will have to be put on hold for 2 weeks.
Follow-up
Typically, 3 follow-up visits are necessary — at 10 days, 6 weeks, and 6 months following surgery.
