Achieve Healthy, Beautiful Skin with GRASS

Achieve Healthy, Beautiful Skin with GRASS

allysonAllyson Says:

Beautiful skin begins with healthy skin.  GRASS is an acronym for a skincare regimen that incorporates everything you need to achieve healthy, glowing, beautiful skin.

  1. Growth Factors
  2. Retinols
  3. Antioxidants
  4. Specialty Products
  5. Sun Protection

Each component of the GRASS regimen has a specific purpose. Growth Factors such as TNS Recovery Complex rebuild collagen and treat fine lines and wrinkles. Retinol is a chemical exfoliant that addresses acne, pores, fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture, skin discolorations, and acts as a vehicle for any product applied prior.  Antioxidants lsuch as SkinMedica Vitamin C&E Complex protect against free radicals and basically slow down the aging process.  Specialty Products would encompass any product(s) for your unique needs ie. Acne, brightening, redness relief, scar recovery.  Sun Protection is for UV defense (SPF 15 minimum daily).  Sun Screen Protects your investment.  Recently, SkinMedica introduced the first Super Screen that not only protects you from UVA/UVB rays but also infrared.

My recommendation is to resist the skincare impulse buy at the drug or department store.  These products generally do not stack up against the cosmeceuticals available in your physician’s office causing your commitment to wane as results are not achieved.  Consult with your skin care professional and invest in a skincare regimen that will work for you and produce beautiful results.

Dermal Filler Dos.

lyzahLyzah, Registered Nurse

Dermal fillers are used to correct volume loss in the face.  We can use these in cheeks, lips, tear troughs, temples, nasolabial folds, jaw line, ear lobes, chin… almost everywhere really.  When injecting dermal fillers, there are several guidelines I like to share with my patients to help them to achieve their best possible outcome.

First, I like to advise patients how to prepare to receive the injections.  I suggest that you discontinue the use of Aspirin, Fish Oil, and Vitamin E supplements 10 days prior.  This does not mean you can’t have filler if you took Aspirin that day or the night before.  It simply means you may experience some bruising associated with the blood thinning effect of these products.  I would also recommend taking Arnica (homeopathic for bruising) and Bromelain (homeopathic for inflammation) tablets 3 days prior (continue for 7 days after).  Again, if you don’t, it is not a deal breaker.  You just may experience more bruising and swelling.

Next, I like to give my patients a realistic idea of what to expect.  Many fillers are temporary hyaluronic acids that your body will eventually absorb naturally between 6-12 months.  Initial treatments, may require a ‘touch-up’ in 4-6 months to prolong results and/or increase volume for best results. This also depends on which product and how much product you choose initially.  The initial volume with Sculptra (polylactic acid) will diminish after the first 3-5 days. PLLA particles will then work to stimulate your own collagen to replenish lost volume. It is then important to follow up every 6-8 weeks until you achieve ‘FULL correction’ with this product. I stress that it is common to have swelling, redness, and even bruising after treatment. Following the instructions above and icing the area can help diminish one’s chance of experiencing these undesirable side effects.

Lastly, I recommend that you avoid direct exposure to heat and sunlight, excessive manipulation and rubbing of the treated area(s) for 48 hours, chemical peels and laser treatments immediately after.   Apply ice to the treated area(s) for the first 48 hours as well as Arnica cream and continue taking your Bromelain.  I also recommend drinking plenty of water for the next 5 days as this will help hyaluronic acid to ‘hydrate’.

I welcome my patients to call me if they have any questions post procedure.  This will help me when administering your next treatment.

Clean Skin and Clear Pores with Clarisonic Smart Profile

allysonShould I be using a Clarisonic?

Clarisonic is a hand held rotary facial device that uses a patented sonic wave to blast dirt, oil, pollution, and makeup out of your pores. The result is smoother, softer skin with the added benefit of better topical product absorption. At Corbett Cosmetic we offer the Clarisonic Smart Profile. This is a more powerful device resulting in 11x better makeup removal than hands alone and gentle enough to use twice daily and your skin will be more receptive to the products you apply.  We recommend using this in conjunction with the     G R A S S skincare routine.  Welcome to the best skin of your life.

Permanent Hair Removal in a Snap.

allysonIf you are tired of shaving, you should try laser hair removal.  Laser Hair Removal has become the preferred option and hair removal continues to be the #1 requested aesthetic treatment. Permanent hair removal happens when light passes through the skin and is absorbed by individual hair follicles. The process damages the hair follicles enough to inhibit future growth. The Cynosure Icon System offers high peak power and state-of-the-art cooling resulting in fast treatments with excellent results!  When using the laser as the preferred method of hair removal, one must commit to an average of 6 treatments.  Each treatment is administered about 6-8 weeks apart.  This treatment regimen will provide a nice result.  You will no longer have razor burn or angry, painful red bumps that appear as a result of ingrown hairs.  You will simply experience smooth, hair free skin until the growth cycle renews.  Each treatment, you will see less and less hair reappearing, eventually ending your love/hate relationship with your razor.

Beautiful skin starts with an even complexion. Rx – IPL

allysonWhat is IPL?

If hyperpigmentation is your concern, you are not alone.  1.972 BILLION other people have that same concern. Say goodbye to sun damage, blotchy redness, hyperpigmentation, small facial veins, and more! Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or PhotoFacial uses pulsed light to penetrate the skin. The result is blood vessel constriction, collagen formation, and lifting away brown spots. The procedure is quick and requires no downtime. The best candidates for IPL are people with light, untanned skin. IPL can effectively improve skin texture, eliminate discolorations, reduce pore size, and minimize wrinkles and fine lines.  To keep your results in check, we recommend protecting your investment with SkinMedica’s Lytera for your at-home treatment.  Lytera is applied morning and night and contains a combination of ingredients that effectively reduce the appearance of skin discoloration and dark spots in as little as 4 weeks.  It has similar efficacy to 4% hydroquinone but unlike hydroquinone, Lytera can be used continuously where as hydroquinone’s recommended treatment is 3 months on, 3 months off .  IPL treatment in conjunction with Lytera will give you a fantastic result of a glowing, more even complexion.

Laser Tattoo Removal

Questions about removing a tattoo are one of the most common non surgically related phone calls in our office. And based on those calls, it is clear that there is a lot of misinformation about the process out there.

I have been using lasers to remove tattoos since 1999 and have ‘lasered’ 1000’s of tattoos. Based on that experience, I’ve realized some some basic truths: (1) Removing a tattoo is not easy (2) on the front end it is impossible to tell you how many treatments it will take (3) not all tattoos are treatable (4) not all lasers are equally capable, and (5) not all practitioners are equally trained. So be careful.

The way a laser works is by hitting the tattoo ink and breaking it into tiny particles so that your body can remove it. This occurs layer by layer, top to bottom, and so it takes time. Every time the tattoo is treated the ink closest to the skin is  broken apart. But as most tattoos have several millimeters thickness of ink, it requires several treatments to work through the full thickness of the tattoo. So it’s not a “one and done” treatment. 6 to 12 treatments is normal.

Lasers are all different. Some will treat blue/black, some red/yellow/orange, some green. Very few lasers can treat  the whole spectrum of colors, so make sure the laser you are considering has the capability to actually treat the colors within your tattoo. Additionally, not all lasers have the power to penetrate the skin so as to hit the deeper layers of ink, that is another question to consider.

Who is actually treating you? The person operating the laser may very well have no medical background at all. Zero. None. Yet they are using an instrument that can burn and/or scar your skin and it’s painful. Fact: Laser treatments hurt. There’s no sugar coating that. It’s painful. So, numbing the area is essential and a topical cream won’t cut it. Local anesthesia, in my opinion, is essential. Only an MD can appropriately numb the area. Lasering the tattoo without numbing is virtually intolerable. Questioning the pre-treatment numbing is highly recommended.

When you are considering laser tattoo removal, look very closely at who is operating the laser and where it is being done. Options range from Board Certified Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists offices to someone in a store front who bought a laser off of E Bay. On-line coupons or treatment packages, while attractive, might not be the best way to go. Do your research.

In summary, removing a tattoo is possible. But it will require several treatments, it will be fairly expensive, and the cheapest, easiest, fastest claim is probably all hype. Look very carefully and choose wisely.
