What is the secret to flawless skin?

We all want to have healthy, glowing, flawless looking skin. Skin care can seem so complicated and overwhelming with all the products on the market claiming to have the answer. The answer is not so much in the products themselves rather the ingredients in the products. The “secret” to flawless looking skin is not in just 1 product but a complete regimen geared toward your own skin concerns (with compliance, of course). This skin care regimen can be as simple or complex as you would like. The flawless skin regimen looks something like this:

  1. Cleanse twice a day with a makeup removing cleanser
  2. Exfoliate manually and chemically everyday
  3. Hydrate/Moisturize everyday
  4. Use SPF everyday

The specifics of these products can vary with skin type, but we do offer skin care for all skin types at The Medical Spa at Corbett Cosmetic.

A NEW generation of Sunscreen.

SkinMedica’s Total Defense + Repair is the first and only Superscreen. Formulated for all skin types, it not only protects against UVA and UVB rays, but also harmful Infrared rays (IR-A rays).

Infrared is a form of light… light that we cannot see with our eyes, but that we can feel on our skin as heat. We experience infrared light every time we feel the heat of the sun on our skin or heat from sources such as electronics, or campfires. IR-A rays penetrate deeper into the skin than UVA and UVB rays, and can cause skin changes similar to those caused by UV light, namely, broken blood vessels, photo-ageing, fine lines and wrinkles.

Total Defense + Repair features SOL-IR an Advanced Antioxidant Complex to help protect against UVA, UVB, IR-A, free radicals, and it also helps to correct the signs of aging.

Women in their 40s and 50s experience particularly dramatic hormonal changes because they are either perimenopausal or menopausal.  Many women experience a dramatic decline in hormones during this stage which can trigger skin changes.

In our office, the skin complaints I hear most from women in this particular age group are dissatisfaction with age spots, uneven skin tone, volume loss, texture changes, dryness and sensitization. All of these skin issues become more prominent in more zones of the face as cell turnover and collagen production slow. We have in office treatments to combat these issues but office treatments are a quick fix.  To protect your investment and achieve healthy glowing skin, these treatments need to be coupled with a comprehensive skincare routine.  It’s time to call on intense ingredients including peptides, growth factors, antioxidant vitamins and Retinol to stimulate collagen production, repair damage, firm and shield – and maintain radiance!

Skincare for your 30’s

Now that you’re in your 30s, it’s time to get serious about taking better care of your skin.     If you’ve been diligent with sunscreen, you most likely haven’t seen a radical change in your skin since your 20s. But this is the decade when your complexion may start to look dull due to slower cellular turnover, so regular exfoliation should be your top priority.           Sun worshipers will see an increase in fine lines and damage like dark spots and loss of elasticity—but it’s never too late to get with the (sun protection) program.

We can address these aging skin issues in the office with treatments such as chemical peels, micro-needling and IPL treatments but to achieve optimal, long lasting results, I recommend focusing on your at-home skincare routine.

A sample ideal regimen:

I recommend consulting with your aesthetician to design a personalized skincare routine that will address your specific issues and concerns.  At The Medical Spa at Corbett Cosmetic, offer free skin consultations with visa screenings for your convenience.

Does Latisse really work?  The answer is YES.  Latisse really does work.

Since FDA approval in 2008, Latisse has become THE celebrity-loved lash treatment. It is praised for its ability to grow longer, thicker, darker lashes for those of us who have sparse, thin, or nearly none. It not only extends the growth phase of the existing hair, but also increases the number of hairs that actually grow. Some of my patients even have to cut them because they get so long!

Skincare for the 20 somethings…..

Hey 20 somethings!  This is the most important decade for your skin. The way you care for it now will determine what it will look like for the rest of your life. The number one complaint among women in their 20s is acne, but it’s largely avoidable. Most 20-somethings break out because they use dehydrating products that strip their skin of natural oils. This causes oil glands to overproduce, resulting in pimples.
Skincare in your 20’s should be fairly simple. It’s all about preserving and protecting.

What are Age Spots?

Age spots are pigmented lesions caused by excess melanin in skin cells resulting from UV exposure. People of any age or race can develop these spots. (That was the bad news.) The good news is that there are several treatment options that can help you achieve that beautiful, even skin tone again. Topical treatments used to bleach, lighten or brighten include Hydroquinone, Lytera, or Chemical Peels.  Another popular option is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), for skin types I-IV,  which can pull the excess pigment out of the skin for an immediate improvement. We recommend using Lytera with retinol  to protect your investment and results after your IPL treatment.  Regardless of the treatment option you choose, sunscreen should always be applied afterwards and daily.

Physical vs. Chemical Sunscreen

Physical sunscreens such as Daily Physical Defense by SkinMedica, more commonly referred to as sunblock, contain active mineral ingredients titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide. These ingredients which naturally give both UVA and UVB protection do not penetrate the skin but sit on the surface of the skin and deflect the sun’s rays. Chemical sunscreens such as Total Defense and Repair by SkinMedica, which do penetrate the skin, actually absorb or scatter the sun’s rays. Chemical sunscreens have a tendency to be more irritating to sensitive skin since multiple ingredients are combined to achieve the UVA and UVB coverage. Chemical sunscreens usually rub in easily while Physical Sunscreen can be a little thicker.

So, which one is better?

Physical Sunscreen is the ideal everyday choice, but it’s not waterproof and it must always be applied with your hands. Chemical Sunscreen is better if you are going to be exposed to the sun for extended periods of time because it can be offered in a convenient rub-free, water-resistant aerosol can. The most important point I would like to stress is one must be willing to wear sunscreen daily to protect your skin’s health and your aesthetic investment.

allysonAllyson Says:

Beautiful skin begins with healthy skin.  GRASS is an acronym for a skincare regimen that incorporates everything you need to achieve healthy, glowing, beautiful skin.

  1. Growth Factors
  2. Retinols
  3. Antioxidants
  4. Specialty Products
  5. Sun Protection

Each component of the GRASS regimen has a specific purpose. Growth Factors such as TNS Recovery Complex rebuild collagen and treat fine lines and wrinkles. Retinol is a chemical exfoliant that addresses acne, pores, fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture, skin discolorations, and acts as a vehicle for any product applied prior.  Antioxidants lsuch as SkinMedica Vitamin C&E Complex protect against free radicals and basically slow down the aging process.  Specialty Products would encompass any product(s) for your unique needs ie. Acne, brightening, redness relief, scar recovery.  Sun Protection is for UV defense (SPF 15 minimum daily).  Sun Screen Protects your investment.  Recently, SkinMedica introduced the first Super Screen that not only protects you from UVA/UVB rays but also infrared.

My recommendation is to resist the skincare impulse buy at the drug or department store.  These products generally do not stack up against the cosmeceuticals available in your physician’s office causing your commitment to wane as results are not achieved.  Consult with your skin care professional and invest in a skincare regimen that will work for you and produce beautiful results.

Dermal fillers are used to correct volume loss in the face.  We can use these in cheeks, lips, tear troughs, temples, nasolabial folds, jaw line, ear lobes, chin… almost everywhere really.  When injecting dermal fillers, there are several guidelines I like to share with my patients to help them to achieve their best possible outcome.

First, I like to advise patients how to prepare to receive the injections.  I suggest that you discontinue the use of Aspirin, Fish Oil, and Vitamin E supplements 10 days prior.  This does not mean you can’t have filler if you took Aspirin that day or the night before.  It simply means you may experience some bruising associated with the blood thinning effect of these products.  I would also recommend taking Arnica (homeopathic for bruising) and Bromelain (homeopathic for inflammation) tablets 3 days prior (continue for 7 days after).  Again, if you don’t, it is not a deal breaker.  You just may experience more bruising and swelling.

Next, I like to give my patients a realistic idea of what to expect.  Many fillers are temporary hyaluronic acids that your body will eventually absorb naturally between 6-12 months.  Initial treatments, may require a ‘touch-up’ in 4-6 months to prolong results and/or increase volume for best results. This also depends on which product and how much product you choose initially.  The initial volume with Sculptra (polylactic acid) will diminish after the first 3-5 days. PLLA particles will then work to stimulate your own collagen to replenish lost volume. It is then important to follow up every 6-8 weeks until you achieve ‘FULL correction’ with this product. I stress that it is common to have swelling, redness, and even bruising after treatment. Following the instructions above and icing the area can help diminish one’s chance of experiencing these undesirable side effects.

Lastly, I recommend that you avoid direct exposure to heat and sunlight, excessive manipulation and rubbing of the treated area(s) for 48 hours, chemical peels and laser treatments immediately after.   Apply ice to the treated area(s) for the first 48 hours as well as Arnica cream and continue taking your Bromelain.  I also recommend drinking plenty of water for the next 5 days as this will help hyaluronic acid to ‘hydrate’.

I welcome my patients to call me if they have any questions post procedure.  This will help me when administering your next treatment.
