Breast Implants and Breast Cancer

Breast Implants and Breast Cancer

I am always surprised when I see a new patient for a Lousiville Breast Augmentation and they ask me if implants, especially silicone implants cause cancer.

The answer is a resounding NO! Why in the world would we ever implant a medical device into a person knowing it causes cancer. That would be wrong on every level there is.

Breast implants, saline or silicone, have no relationship to breast cancer. In fact, a large percentage of women with breast cancer have these same implants placed to reconstruct their breast. Furthermore, when we look at large groups of women with implants in, some studies indicate that they tend to get breast cancer at a lower rate than women without implants.

So, if someone told you you would get cancer because you have implants placed it’s just not true.

Different sized breast implants.

An attorney friend of mine called today because a person called his office and wanted to sue a Plastic Surgeon who used different sized implants for her augmentation.

Using different sized gel implants or inflating saline implants to different volumes is very common and not malpractice.

When I do a Louisville, KY breast augmentation , I would estimate that I use different volumes about 75% of the time. A lot of people are surprised to hear this but it shouldn’t come as too big of shock. Our right side and our left sides are different. One arm is longer, one foot bigger etc… and the same holds true for a woman’s breasts. To compensate for this we use different sized and shaped implants.

This isn’t malpractice, it’s a neccessity.

What’s my favorite operation?

This is a tough one and my answer changes but today it’s an upper lid Louisville Blepharoplasty. I did a few this past week and am always amazed at what a great operation it is.

Why? Several reasons.

First, the operation requires the use of fine instrumentation, which I love! Second, everyone looks better and they look better immediately. You don’t have to wait a long time for the swelling to go down, bruising to go away etc… Third, the recovery isn’t bad. Most patients complain of little to no discomfort.

In addition, the operation is quick, the complication rate is very, very low and the patient satisfaction rate is very high.

Louisville Blepharoplasties are often combined with Louisville facelifts and Louisville Browlifts.

Symmastia

Symmastia is a condition where the breast implants have displaced beyond the midline and meet in the middle of your chest. In other words, the pockets that hold the right and left breast implants communicate. It gives you the look of having one large breast.

This is an uncommon, but known problem after breast augmentation. The fix requires surgery and can be very difficult to correct. The problem can occur with either saline or silicone implants placed above or below the muscle.

If you think you have this problem you are welcome to call our office at 502.721.0330 to schedule a complimentary consultation.

Thigh Lifts

Louisville Thigh Lifts are procedures that address mainly the inner thigh. The purpose of the surgery is to lift the skin and remove the skin fat excess that commonly collects on the uppr inner thigh.

The procedure is done in an operating room and requires general anesthesia. It can take 2 to 3 hours and can be done as an outpatient. Recovery takes about a week to 10 days.

This operation is usually combined with Louisville Liposuction or a Louisville Tummy Tuck. If this is a procedure you are contemplating please call our office at 502.721.0330.

Dysport and Botox…the units are different.

As Dysport hits the market, I have come to realize that the patients don’t understand the dosing differences between this and Botox.

Dysport is dosed 2.5 times as much as botox. In other words, the typical dose of Botox to treat the glabella is 20 units. With Dysport we use 50 units.

Because of this difference, a unit of Dysport is less expensive than a unit of Botox, usually about 40% of the cost when compared unit for unit.

If you are considering Dysport please clarify this point with your injector before a treatment to avoid an unpleasant cost surprise at the check out counter.

I hate my upper arms, what can I do?

Louisville, KY Liposuction or Louisville, KY Brachioplasty are the two options and each has its advantages and disadvantages.

With Liposuction of the upper arm, the limitation is the amount of skin tightening possible. The fat can be removed and the skin will tighten up to some degree, but  there will be residual skin laxity.

The brachioplasty operation is a more powerful operation in that it can deal with the skin laxity and the fat. But, and it’s a big ‘but’, the price for the improved contour is the scar.

Implant Exchange. When and Why.

As a Louisville, KY Breast Augmentation surgeon, I am frequently asked when implants need to be replaced. My answer is…”If they ain’t broke, don’t fix ’em.”

The only absolute indication for replacement is deflation.

Other relative indications are weight changes and breast changes resulting from pregnancy and aging. A lot of times I will meet with a patient who has implants that are twenty-soemthing years old, she has had a few kids, and has added a few pounds over the years. The actual implant is usually fine, but the appearance of the breast, particularly out of the bra, may not be. Often, due to weight gain, the original implants are making the breast too large. Another common problem is that the breast is now drooping off the implant and a lift is in order.

So the answer to the question is that implants only need to be exchanged if they have failed or if you are unhappy with your breast’s appearance.

Brachioplasty Scars

After lap banding and gastric bypass surgery, a lot of patients seek Louisville Ky plastic surgery for breast, tummy, arm and thigh procedures to get rid of loose skin.

The arm reduction surgery, called a brachioplasty, is pretty popular for those with significant skin/adipose deposits on the back of the upper arms. This procedure is fairly straightforward and usually takes only about an hour. The problem is the scar that results.

Brachioplasty scars tend to be some of the more noticable scars left after cosmetic plastic surgery. The scars tend to widen and stay more red than typical scars. Still many patients find this an acceptable trade-off in order to rid themselves of all the loose skin.

The take home message is to make certain you see some photos before to make the decision to have a brachioplasty because the scars are the shortcoming of this operation.
